🧠 Before You Tell Your Child to “Focus”… 5 Skills That Help Them Learn Better
Sometimes, children need a simpler task and opportunities to practise the skills that support learning, rather than repeated instructions or comparisons with others.
Here are five areas to support, with simple activities you can try:
🎯 1. Attention
Helping your child focus on a task, stay engaged for an appropriate time, and shift attention when needed.
🟢 Try this: Offer cards in different colours and ask your child to find the red one. Start with two choices and gradually add more.
👀 2. Perception
Helping your child recognise and make sense of information, including shapes, sounds, and positions.
🟢 Try this: Match identical shapes, identify a familiar sound, or follow directions such as “Put the ball above the chair” and then “Put it underneath.”
🧩 3. Memory
Helping your child retain information and recall it when needed.
🟢 Try this: Show two pictures and name them together. Hide one and ask, “Which picture is missing?” Add more pictures as your child becomes ready.
🍎 4. Concept Formation
Helping your child recognise similarities and differences and group objects by shared features.
🟢 Try this: Mix pictures of fruit and vehicles. Ask your child to sort them, then ask, “Why do these belong together?” They can respond using words or gestures.
💡 5. Problem-Solving
Helping your child understand a situation, consider solutions, try one, and check the result.
🟢 Try this: “Our pencil is missing. What could we do?” Allow time for your child to suggest a solution, such as looking for it or choosing another pencil.
🌱 How can we make these activities helpful?
✅ Start with what your child can already do and build gradually.
✅ Give short, clear instructions and demonstrate when needed.
✅ Keep activities brief and enjoyable, with breaks and opportunities to move.
✅ Encourage effort and progress. Avoid criticism and comparisons.
✅ Practise skills in different everyday situations, beyond the activity itself.
The goal is for children to understand, use what they learn in daily life, and feel capable of succeeding. ❤️
These are educational activities. Difficulty completing them alone does not establish a learning disability. Choosing suitable support begins with understanding and assessing each child’s needs.
💬 Which area does your child need the most support with: attention, perception, memory, categorisation, or problem-solving?
